Two killed and 50+ wounded this afternoon in Boston. As bombs were planted in places along the finish line of this years Boston Marathon in what is believed by many to be a form of a terrorist attack but that has not yet been confirmed as so. Seen in the video above the blast was strong enough to knock runners and by standers to the ground. Luckily these bombs detonated after the Marathons nearly 2,000 runners had already crossed the finish line. Still, keep the victims and their loved ones in your prayers #PrayForBoston
It pains me to not be present to attend such a meaningful moment for a person with such a loving and beautiful heart and spirit, but I know it pains his family more than anyone else could ever imagine. Due to the unexpected passing of a close friend of mine Wayne Drummer -whom was stabbed to death by his girlfriend of 5 years in her St. Petersburg apartment- his family and close friends are asking that people come out and offer their condolences and support as we all grief such a tragic event. There will be a candle light memorial outside of 785 Regent Dr, Dekalb, IL tonight at 6 p.m. sharp. If you're in Dekalb and knew of Wayne, I ask that you go to pay your respects. Being that his body remains in Florida, his family is asking that people donate and/or contribute money to help the family cover the expenses of the cost to have him shipped back to Chicago for a proper home going.Anything is greatly appreciated, no amount is too little or too much. If you cannot make it to the memorial, you can still donate by going to www.giveforward.com/fundraiser/fl72/bringanangelhome. We love you Wayne, and you'll live on through the memories of so many people! I will forever cherish every minute we shared and you'll always have a special place in my heart. We've lost a soldier but God gained yet another one of His angels. Gone but never forgotten, RIP my good friend Wayne!
Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul.
Take a look at the inspiring story of a man named Orlando Ward who was once homeless and is now an executive after admitting himself to a rehabilitation center. Ward's downfall began almost three decades ago when he suffered a devastating knee injury during his sophomore year of college. He was never able to recover. "That put me on a different trajectory in life", Ward said. "There was a period of lonliness and isolation that made me make decisions that I wouldn't have made in the past". His life then went on a downward spiral that lasted 17 years, during which he lost several jobs and never got sober despite numerous rehab attempts -- until 1999, when he landed at Midnight Mission, an outreach program that offers services to the homeless as well as drug and alcohol rehabilitation. His main skill on the court was rebounding, and that's exactly what he did at Midnight Mission. After 10 years at the organization, he was named its vice president of operations, the highest position attained by any person who came off the street. This is a story of one of the MANYthings that can be done through having faith and determination! All things are possible through Christ who strengthens us. If Ward can, YOU CAN! #BeInspired!
"The Importance of Becoming the 'Village' That Helps Raise Black Children"
In the U.S alone, more than 21 million children are growing up in single-parent households. Among African American children, it's slightly more than 48 percent. There is a NEED for Black men and women both to step up and become that "village" that raises these children. We can do so be volunteering to mentor and helping out in the community. We are not goons & savages, we are the Kings & Queens of our future!!
Chicago's own Lupe Fiasco takes the time to mourn over angel Jonylah Watkins in his latest release "Jonylah Forever" . The track is passionate and heartfelt to say the very least. The truth behind the song is, we go and live our lives after hearing such a tragic event but what about the loved ones of this innocent 6-month-infant? How does her mother move on from this? There was a whole future ahead of this little one's life and that was taken away from her without a second thought over foolish a gang-related beef. Is this what's cool? How many of our angels have to die in vain before we WAKE UP and realize that we are killing our own future!? If we don't get it together, soon they'll be no more of us left. Is there any hope for the future? I believe so, but it takes brother and sisterhood; unity. BE A MAN & PUT THE GUNS DOWN! Take a stand and make a difference for our youth, if not for ourselves. Live because Jonylah couldn't! Rest In Paradise baby girl.
Cruel isn't even the word! In no way, shape, or form does any child and certainly no infant deserves to be shot and killed! When is enough going to be enough? When does the violence and the "drilling" of our own race stop being glamorized and glorified?! Chicago has seen a rise in gun violence- much of it being gang-related - and registered at least 500 homicides last year for the first time since 2008. In 2011, there were 435 homicides. Young African American males should wake up and realize that a life is a prized possession. Since when did it become our jobs as humans to decide who lives and who dies? Men need to step up and play the role in the community as the leaders, the fathers, the role models to the younger generations to come. Violence has been going on for years and is yet and still being looked upon as the way to go. When will we realize that we are the future? We cannot teach what we don't know, and that's why it's important for us to lead by example, to take the role as the adults and to straighten up our acts. How many more innocent victims are going to have to lose their lives before we realize that our media plays a HUGE part in our generation today? Nowadays, parents are having to bury their children left and right? Men need to realize that the street life only gets you one or two places, dead or in jail. Men need to realize that their actions affect their families, friends and loved ones as well as themselves. Ask yourself would "drilling" and being a "hitta" still be cool if this was your child, grandchild, or family member? My condolences go out to the angel's family, this is a pain no parent should have to feel. We must take a stand and be the change we wish to see!
